This limited edition illustration by Kristina Dam is an abstraction of the celebrated Barcelona Pavillion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The building was the German Pavillion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. The Pavillion in Barcelona is without any doubt one of the most significant buildings in the history of modern architecture. It is celebrated and known for its simple form and its spectacular use of extravagant materials; marble, red onyx and travertine. The iconic furniture piece – the Barcelona chair – was also made especially for the pavilion. The same magnificent minimalistic features in the design are evident in both the Barcelona Chair and Pavillion. Like so many other architects, Kristina Dam is a true admirer of the work of Mies Van Der Rohe. This building has inspired so many important modernist buildings and likewise, it has triggered Kristina to do this abstraction of it.
